On the 28th of June, while walking through the campus park, I encountered a heart-wrenching sight. A little girl, who could not be more than six years old, was sitting on a bench, crying uncontrollably with a letter in her hands. All around her, people were walking by, but no one seemed to notice or care about her plight. As I drew closer, I cautiously asked her what was wrong.

In a trembling voice, she explained that she had received a letter from her father this morning, informing her that he could no longer afford to pay her school fees and that she would have to withdraw from school. She had been so looking forward to finishing primary school and was devastated by the news that her father could not provide for her.

My heart broke for the little girl, so I sat down beside her, offering her a comforting hug. I asked her to tell me more about her situation and she explained that when her father had been laid off from his job due to the pandemic, they had been struggling to make ends meet. Her mother had already left them years ago, so they had no external support.

I thought of how I could help her, and it came to me in a moment – I could pay for her school fees! I got up and fetched my wallet, promising to pay for her fees for the year.

The little girl was overjoyed, and thanked me profusely for my kindness. I could see the worry in her eyes disperse and a hint of a smile played on her lips. We exchanged numbers, and I promised that I would be in touch to take care of her school fees.

It was only later that I realized how much the little girl’s story had moved me, and made me think of the countless other children in similar situations. In a world where we are so often consumed in our own struggles, we need to remember to reach out to those in need — with a kind word, a helping hand, or a gift of any size. We never know how much it could mean to someone, and might even give them hope for the future.
